Happy
Cake
Happy Cake had its origins at Kemoo Farm
Restaurant, founded 1916 in the small pineapple farming community of Wahiawa in central Oahu, the "Pineapple
Capital of the World'. We receive and do our mailing at
Kunia, a true rural plantation community near Wahiawa.
The cake was prepared for restaurant guests who wanted
to take a genuine taste of Hawaii to friends back home.
Happy Cake has since become an international favorite. Happy Cake is made today, as it was then, with lots of
delectable Mauna Loa macadamia nuts, choice Maui
pineapple chunks, and tropical coconut. It is baked
right here at Kemoo Farm to ensure the highest possible
quality. To enjoy Happy Cake to the fullest, we suggest
chilling before slicing. 2

HISTORY
OF HAPPY CAKES
Starting as a pig farm in 1916, adding a general store in 1920, then food
service 7 years later, Kemoo Farms has seen lots of changes in its long
history. As depicted in the film "From here to eternity,"
soldiers from Scholfield Barracks enjoyed walking from their barracks to
breakfast at "Choi's" bar at Kemoo Farms. When the farm was
given up in 1931, a dining room overlooking the lake was opened, prompting long
lines of soldiers eager for one our sizzling steaks. During World War II,
even the generals stood in line.
In the 1960's, Harry and David of the famous mail order business in Medford,
Oregon, visited us and gave us the idea of selling a pineapple macadamia nut
cake. Our baker worked on a recipe and we started to bake the cakes in
1967. Later the cakes were baked at a bakery in Lodi, California. We
had a ranch in West Point, Calaveras County, California and did our packing and
shipping from the town's small post office, but found it tough going, especially
in winter when 3 feet of snow trapped us and we had to put our cake boxes by the
fire to warm them so we could fold them. Eventually we returned to
Hawaii. Now we bake the Happy Cake here at Kemoo Farms in our ovens
overlooking our beautiful lake. It must be the only bakery in the world
with such a lovely view.
We've
served our Happy Cake for over 32 years and each one gets better. Ava
Gardener sent her friends our cakes for years, and President and Mrs. Reagan
loved our cakes and posed with a Happy Cake in the White House. When our
cakes are rotating in the oven, a "singing" sound is heard, prompting
a local song writer to pen "The Happy Cakes are Singing." A hula
halau is even creating a "Happy Cake Hula." We hope our cakes
will make you and your guests "happy!" too!
